Course Overview
The Medical and Trauma Assessment Course is a focused, skills-based training designed to enhance the ability to rapidly evaluate, manage, and stabilize patients experiencing medical or traumatic emergencies.
Led by experienced first responders and emergency medical professionals, this 2-hour course bridges classroom learning with real-world application — giving students the confidence and competence to perform accurate, efficient patient assessments in high-pressure situations.
This course is ideal for EMT students, healthcare professionals, public safety personnel, and anyone who wants to strengthen their clinical decision-making and hands-on assessment abilities.
What’s Included
1. Scene Size-Up & Initial Impression
Establishing scene safety and identifying hazards
Determining mechanism of injury (MOI) or nature of illness (NOI)
Assessing the number of patients and need for additional resources
Determining responsiveness and level of consciousness (AVPU scale)
2. Primary Assessment
Rapid assessment of airway, breathing, and circulation (ABCs)
Identifying life-threatening conditions and prioritizing interventions
Managing compromised airways and controlling severe bleeding
Exposing, inspecting, and identifying immediate threats to life
3. Secondary Assessment – Trauma
Performing a systematic head-to-toe exam
Recognizing and treating various trauma injuries including:
Head, neck, and spinal injuries
Chest and abdominal trauma
Musculoskeletal injuries (fractures, sprains, dislocations)
Burns and soft tissue injuries
Assessing for internal bleeding and shock management
4. Secondary Assessment – Medical
Conducting focused medical assessments using the SAMPLE and OPQRST methods
Identifying and managing medical emergencies such as:
Respiratory distress and chest pain
Altered mental status and neurological issues
Diabetic, allergic, and toxicological emergencies
Environmental and heat-related conditions
Gathering and interpreting vital signs and patient history
5. Ongoing Assessment & Handoff
Reassessing interventions and monitoring changes in patient condition
Effective patient communication and documentation
Professional handoff techniques using SBAR or MIST formats for EMS or hospital staff
